And yet, there’s something about conscience-driven young Hannah that draws James, first to Bath, and then into one increasingly hare-brained scheme after another. She confounds him at every turn, subverting his expectations and threatening to do what no lady has succeeded in doing before—thawing his ice-cold heart.

Today I’m reviewing A Lady of Conscience by Mimi Matthews. In this historical romance, we follow bluestocking, animal activist, Hannah Heywood, who is currently seeking a husband. After encountering the handsome, yet, a bit… standoffish, supercilious, aloof, (think Mr. Darcy before he meets Elizabeth Bennet) James Beresford, Viscount St. Clare, during an informal family gathering, Hannah can’t seem to not compare her encounters with him to those who seek her hand in marriage.
Review A Lady of Conscience
Mimi Matthews is back with her (maybe) final novel in the Somerset Series. I remember being so excited towards the end of Return to Satterthwaite Court, when Hannah dances with James, my thoughts immediately went to daydreaming about how these two will find their own happily ever after.
Matthews is one of my absolute favorite historical romance authors. She has this wholesome way of taking Victorian era characters and shaping them into people that feel fresh and modern.
As for A Lady of Conscience, there were a few sweet moments between Hannah and James (the donkey scene being one of them) that I absolutely loved. Where readers will crave more of these gem encounters, watching Hannah and James’ relationship build to a crescendo that melts your heart.
A Few Last Thoughts
My one draw back for this one was the length of the novel. It felt too short. James and Hannah’s story was wrapped up way to quickly. I needed more.😭
Otherwise, this one is a solid read.
Pride & Prejudice meets Beauty and the Beast, fans of Matthews’ previous novels will enjoy her latest story in the Somerset Series.
