Until he takes his younger brother’s place in a drunken prank and finds himself kidnapped, carted off to the Amarran Palace, and informed that he is to become the husband of Queen Potential Olerra. Sanos needs to escape before anyone learns his real identity, but the more he gets to know his captor, the less sure he is of what he truly wants.
Book Review: What Fury Brings

Today I’m reviewing Tricia Levenseller’s Debut adult novel What Fury Brings. What Fury Brings, has an interesting plot. Flipping the patriarchy, where men are now subservient, docile, and controlled by women. Before I go any further I want preface something first. As someone who identifies as a woman, I completely agree with female rage. That the patriarchy needs to be dismantled and that all women (including transwomen) should have respect, dignity, equal rights and pay as men.
Now, as I read the book, I was trying very hard to view this from a diplomatic lens. Because, yes, female rage is valid. There is an incredible amount of evidence over the course of our species that shows how women have been treated by men. Nevertheless, we should always keep in mind, abusing human beings is wrong.
And when you have a main character that is vying for the throne, but still capitulates to the social norms of her countries governing body, using demeaning, coercive and abusive measures, both publicly and privately to the man she will kill for, I’m forced to question how Amarra is truly going to make any type of change when she herself is participating in the same offensive behaviors. Both can’t be true at the same time.
I prefer when authors lean into the opposite of social norms, (Sabaa Tahir comes to mind with her An Ember in the Ashes series) where their main characters’ defiance is the catalyst to making lasting and meaningful change for everyone.
As for the romance, I wasn’t fully invested in Amarra’s and Sanos’ relationship, especially how quickly it shifted from lust to soul mates. Remember, Sanos was abducted. He didn’t come willingly. And then is subsequently tortured in some demeaning ways. Had Levenseller made a much slower burn, where Amarra shifts her actions to match her thoughts, perhaps the drastic change in Sanos’ feelings for Amarra would make more sense.
With an epic battle scene between Amarra and the King of Brutus, readers who enjoy a dark fantasy, fake partner, captive romance, Plus-size FMC, rival royals, enemies-to-lovers, and extra spicy, then give this one a try.
